The WHO estimates show India’s life expectancy at birth reached 71 years in 2023, higher than Pakistan’s 68.2 years but lower than Bangladesh’s 72.7 years.
India’s life expectancy fell from 70.5 years in 2019 to 68.1 years in 2021, then recovered to 71 years in 2023.
India’s healthy life expectancy was 60.6 years in 2023, compared with 58.4 years in 2021 and 60.5 years in 2019.
At age 60, Indians could expect another 18.8 years of life in 2023, including 13.7 healthy years.
India’s disease pattern shifted from communicable diseases making up nearly 62% of deaths from the top 10 causes in 2000 to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) making up nearly 75% in 2023.
In 2023, major causes of death included ischaemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), stroke and diabetes, while tuberculosis and diarrhoeal diseases remained among the top 10 causes.
WHO’s Global Health Estimates cover life expectancy, healthy life expectancy, causes of death and disease burden from 2000 to 2023; global life expectancy reached 73.3 years in 2023.
