  • The day highlights the importance of the Himalayan ecosystem and its conservation.
  • It was first declared in Uttarakhand in 2015 to promote Himalayan conservation, sustainable development and community participation.
  • The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) is an important source of water for major rivers such as the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra.
  • The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) Snow Update 2026 reported 27.8% lower snow persistence than average, with 10 of 12 major river basins showing below-normal snow persistence.
  • Glacier retreat can reduce long-term natural water storage and increase risks such as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
