IMD Colour-Coded Weather Alerts

  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues green, yellow, orange, and red alerts for different weather conditions.
  • Alerts are used for rain, thunderstorms, snowfall, hailstorms, dust storms, heatwaves, and cold waves.
  • A green alert means light rain and no advisory; a yellow alert means be aware.
  • An orange alert means be prepared for severe weather, and a red alert means take action for extremely dangerous weather.
  • Rainfall alerts are based on 24-hour rain: green (<64 mm), yellow (64.5–115.5 mm), orange (115.6–204.4 mm), and red (>204.5 mm).
  • India Meteorological Department (IMD) is an Indian agency of the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India.
