- The Election Commission of India (ECI) has begun the process to delist the 345 inactive Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPPs).
- These parties have not contested any election since 2019.
- Their offices could not be physically located during verification.
- India has over 2,800 RUPPs registered under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
- Many of these parties enjoy tax benefits but have not met the basic requirement of contesting elections.
- Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) have been asked to issue show-cause notices to these parties.
- Parties can explain their case in hearings before the CEOs but the ECI will make the final delisting decision.
