The day is observed to commemorate the introduction of income tax in India in 1860.
Income tax was introduced by Sir James Wilson, the first Finance Member of British India, after the Revolt of 1857.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has officially observed Income Tax Day since 2010, marking 150 years of income tax in India.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 came into force on April 1, 2026, replacing the Income-tax Act, 1961, to simplify tax laws and improve taxpayer convenience.
The 167th Income Tax Day (2026) is the first celebration after the implementation of the Income-tax Act, 2025.
