  • Sudhakar Dalela, Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, is India’s BRICS Sherpa as India holds the BRICS Chair in 2026.
  • He is currently Secretary (Economic Relations), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and coordinates India’s position, negotiations and summit preparations within BRICS.
  • He previously served as Ambassador of India to Bhutan, Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington, D.C., and Consul General in Chicago.
  • A BRICS Sherpa is the senior official who represents a member country in diplomatic preparations, negotiations and consensus-building before BRICS summits.
  • The first Sherpa/Sous-Sherpa meeting for India’s 2026 BRICS Chairship was held in New Delhi in February 2026, with Dalela as India’s Sherpa.
  • BRICS Chair refers to the country holding the rotating chairmanship, while the Sherpa is the senior official representing an individual member country.
