India’s Busiest Seaports

  • India’s maritime sector saw a rise in cargo handling from 819 million tonnes in the financial year 2023 to 855 million tonnes in the financial year 2024.
  • This marks an annual growth of 4.3 percent as per the Press Information Bureau (PIB) report.
  • The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways stated that the top five major ports handled 63.12 percent of total cargo as of June 2025.
  • Paradip Port Authority (PPA) in Odisha handled 13.14 million metric tonnes and ranked first with 18.04 percent of total cargo.
  • Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Gujarat stood second and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Maharashtra stands 3rd.
  • Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) in Andhra Pradesh and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) in Kolkata stands at 4th and 5th respectively.
  • Tamil Nadu has three major ports in the top ten list, namely Chennai Port Authority (Rank 7), Kamarajar Port Authority (Rank 8), and V O Chidambaranar Port Authority (Rank 9).
