India’s Literacy Rate in 2023–24

  • India’s literacy rate increased from 74% in 2011 to 80.9% in 2023–24, according to the Ministry of Education.
  • Over 3 crore learners and 42 lakh volunteers have enrolled under the ULLAS–Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram.
  • Nearly 1.83 crore learners have taken foundational literacy and numeracy assessments, achieving a 90% success rate.
  • The programme provides learning material in 26 Indian languages to promote inclusive literacy.
  • Ladakh was declared the first Union Territory to achieve full literacy on June 24, 2024.
  • Himachal Pradesh has become the fourth state to achieve full functional literacy, joining Tripura, Mizoram, and Goa.
