India’s New UNESCO Tentative Sites 2026

  • Four Indian cultural heritage sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, taking India’s total to 73 sites.
  • The four sites are Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble (Assam), Colonial Penal Settlement (Andaman Islands), Nicobarese Cultural Continuity (Nicobar Islands) and Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati (Rajasthan).
  • Sivasagar was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom, while Shekhawati is known for painted frescoes on havelis.
  • A site must remain on the Tentative List for at least one year before it can be nominated for World Heritage inscription.
