India’s New UNESCO Tentative Sites 2026

Four Indian cultural heritage sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, taking India’s total to 73 sites.
The four sites are Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble (Assam), Colonial Penal Settlement (Andaman Islands), Nicobarese Cultural Continuity (Nicobar Islands) and Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati (Rajasthan).
Sivasagar was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom, while Shekhawati is known for painted frescoes on havelis.
A site must remain on the Tentative List for at least one year before it can be nominated for World Heritage inscription.
