The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) 2026 Yearbook classified 12 of India’s estimated 190 nuclear warheads as “operationally deployed,” indicating higher readiness of a small part of India’s nuclear arsenal.
SIPRI stated that 12 Indian nuclear warheads are now “operationally deployed” with delivery systems and under military control.
This does not indicate any change in India’s “No First Use (NFU)” nuclear doctrine or credible minimum deterrence policy.
Operational deployment means warheads are mated with delivery systems such as missiles or submarines and kept in a ready state.
The development is linked to the strengthening of India’s nuclear triad, especially Arihant-class nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs).
