  • IUCN has evaluated the Indian wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) separately for the first time.
  • It suggests that the Indian wolf may be a distinct species within the Canis genus.
  • The population of Indian wolves is estimated to be around 3,000 in India and Pakistan.
  • The species is classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss and persecution.
  • Only 12.4 percent of its distribution lies within protected areas.
