India's Dairy Sector status

  • India remains the world’s top milk producer, contributing about 25 percent of the global milk supply.
  • Milk output grew by 63.56 per cent in 10 years, from 146.3 to 239.3 million tonnes by 2023–24.
  • Per capita milk availability rose by 48 percent to 471 grams per day, above the global average.
  • Dairy forms 5 per cent of India’s GDP (gross domestic product), employing over 8 crore farmers.
  • Shreeja Milk Producer Organisation won the Dairy Innovation Award in Chicago for women’s empowerment.
  • In 2024–25, 565.55 lakh artificial inseminations (AI) were carried out nationwide.
  • India has 22 milk federations, 241 district unions, and 25 milk producer organisations.
  • White Revolution 2.0 targets 75,000 new cooperatives and upgrading 46,422 existing ones by 2028–29.
