India’s maritime sector saw a rise in cargo handling from 819 million tonnes in the financial year 2023 to 855 million tonnes in the financial year 2024.
This marks an annual growth of 4.3 percent as per the Press Information Bureau (PIB) report.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways stated that the top five major ports handled 63.12 percent of total cargo as of June 2025.
Paradip Port Authority (PPA) in Odisha handled 13.14 million metric tonnes and ranked first with 18.04 percent of total cargo.
Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Gujarat stood second and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Maharashtra stands 3rd.
Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) in Andhra Pradesh and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP) in Kolkata stands at 4th and 5th respectively.
Tamil Nadu has three major ports in the top ten list, namely Chennai Port Authority (Rank 7), Kamarajar Port Authority (Rank 8), and V O Chidambaranar Port Authority (Rank 9).
