Tamil Nadu topped the country in the number of factories as per the Annual Survey of Industries 2023–2024.
The survey was released by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on August 27, 2025.
A total of 1,95,89,131 persons were employed in factories across India.
Tamil Nadu accounted for 15.24% of the total factory employment in India.
Gujarat followed with 13.07%, and Maharashtra came next with 12.95%.
Uttar Pradesh had 8.30% and Karnataka had 6.29% of the total industrial workforce.
Out of 2,60,061 factories in India, Tamil Nadu had the highest share with 15.43%.
Gujarat stood second with 12.81% of the total factories.
Maharashtra had 10.20%, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 8.51% and Andhra Pradesh with 6.16%.
Tamil Nadu ranked third in Fixed Capital with a share of 8.09%.
The state also stood third in Output with 10.11% of the national share.
Tamil Nadu was ranked third in Gross Value Added with a contribution of 10.26%.
