- Kerala’s infant mortality rate (IMR) fell to an all-time low of 5 per 1,000 live births in 2023, as per the Sample Registration Survey (SRS).
- This IMR was five times lower than the national average of 25 and even lower than the United States' IMR of 5.6.
- Kerala remained the only state in India with a single-digit IMR and no urban-rural divide in infant mortality.
- Kerala first achieved a single-digit IMR of 7 in 2018 and further reduced it to 6 in 2019 and 5 in 2023.
- Kerala earlier recorded around 5–5.5 lakh live births annually but had only 3,93,231 live births in 2023.
- The number of live births is projected to fall further to approximately 3.54 lakh between April 2024 and March 2025.
- Kerala continued to report an average of 120–140 maternal deaths annually, with the exception of 2021–22.
- Kerala and Andhra Pradesh shared the first position among Indian states with the lowest MMR, based on SRS figures.
