  • The markhor (Capra falconeri) is an iconic and ecologically significant species found across the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia.
  • They spread across Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
  • The markhor was categorized as “Near Threatened” in 2014.
  • The number of mature individuals of markhor in the world is approximately 5,700.
  • It is the national animal of Pakistan.
