The Chinese government and other 32 countries have signed a convention for establishing an international mediation organisation (IOMed)in Hong Kong.
It was described as the “world’s first intergovernmental international legal organisation dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation”.
Its status would be on par with the UN bodies the ICJ and the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.
Article 33 of the UN Charter provides for the peaceful settlement of international disputes through negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement or other peaceful means.
So far, there has been no established intergovernmental organization for the mediation methods of dispute settlement.
