International Whale Shark Day 2026 - August 30

  • The day aims to raise awareness about whale shark conservation.
  • The Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) launched the ‘Save the Whale Shark Campaign’ along coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.
  • The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish on Earth and is a keystone species in marine ecosystems.
  • In India, whale sharks occur along the entire coast, with the largest aggregation found along the Gujarat coast.
  • It is listed as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
