  • China’s Chang’e-6 mission discovered tiny iron oxide crystals in lunar soil.
  • Hematite and maghemite were detected in samples from the South Pole–Aitken Basin.
  • The basin is the oldest and largest known impact zone in the Solar System.
  • Iron oxide formation is linked to oxygen-rich vapour from massive ancient impacts.
  • Chang’e-6 returned deep-region lunar samples to Earth in 2024.
