The 11th session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) concluded in Lima, Peru.
The Multilateral System (MLS) governs access and benefit-sharing of 35 major food crops and 29 forage crops, making up about 80% of the world’s plant-based diet.
The session discussed adopting a revised Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA) to regulate the exchange of plant genetic material and ensure fair sharing of commercial benefits.
The ITPGRFA was adopted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 2001 and came into force in 2004.
It is the first legally binding international treaty dedicated to crop genetic diversity and has 154 countries and the European Union as members.
