- Khangchendzonga National Park is the only Indian site rated as “good” by the IUCN.
- It is also called Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve and was recognised as India’s first “mixed” UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016.
- The park covers 1,784 square kilometres, from subtropical forests to Mount Khangchendzonga at 8,586 metres, the world’s third-highest peak.
- It contains 280 glaciers, over 70 glacial lakes, snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan tahr, and more than 550 bird species.
- The park is culturally significant for the Lepcha people and Tibetan Buddhists, with ancient monasteries like Tholung preserving spiritual traditions.
