The IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) released the report named “Enhancing Climate Change Mitigation in Protected Areas.”
Protected and Conserved Areas (PCAs) safeguard biodiversity, cultural resources, and support sustainable development.
PCAs help remove carbon dioxide, prevent carbon release, and may enable large-scale carbon removal depending on their type.
Protecting 30% of land could lock in 500 billion tonnes of carbon, and protecting 30% of oceans could reduce 20% of emissions needed for the Paris Agreement.
