Japan and US on Deep-Sea Mining

  • Japan and the United States announced a partnership to develop deep-sea mining near Minamitorishima Island.
  • It aims to secure rare earth resources vital for the technology and defence sectors.
  • Exploration will begin in January 2026 at depths of 5,000 to 6,000 metres in Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
  • China currently produces over 90% of the world’s refined rare earths and magnets.
  • The project seeks to diversify global supply chains and reduce dependence on Chinese exports.
