- The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) has recommended the environmental clearance for the 1,200-megawatt (MW) Kalai-II hydropower project in Arunachal Pradesh.
- The project is planned on the Lohit River in the Anjaw district.
- The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report was prepared by WAPCOS Limited.
- But the EIA did not mention the white-bellied heron found in the project area.
- The white-bellied heron is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.
- The species is legally protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
