Tamil Nadu has become the first Indian state to integrate a predictive model for tuberculosis (TB) deaths into its TB elimination programme.
The model was developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research - National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE).
It used data from 56,000 TB patients treated in state-run facilities between July 2022 and June 2023.
The goal is to identify the severely ill TB patients early, speed up their admission, and begin immediate treatment to reduce deaths.
The new system is built into the state’s TB SeWA (Severe TB Web Application).
It will be used under the Tamil Nadu - Kasanoi Erappila Thittam (TN-KET) care initiative.
The application flags the patients based on risk factors like very low body weight, inability to stand, or co-infection with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
