Kashmir’s Sharda Script

  • The first-ever exhibition dedicated to the Sharda script was held at the Chinar Book Festival in Srinagar.
  • Sharda developed between the 8th  and 9th centuries AD and was mainly used by Kashmiri Pandits.
  • Few manuscripts survive, with many texts found between 1875 and 1925 on paper and birch-bark.
  • Archaeological discoveries include 21 lines of Sharda inscriptions on hero-stones in Lolab Valley, Kupwara and finds in Baramulla district.
