The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to change the name of Kerala to “Keralam.”
The proposal was based on a resolution passed unanimously by the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
The President will refer the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, to the State Legislature under Article 3 of the Constitution of India for its views.
After receiving the views, the Union Government will seek the President’s recommendation to introduce the Bill in Parliament.
Article 3 of the Constitution empowers Parliament to alter the name of any existing State by law.
