- The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) approved a leopard birth-control (sterilisation) project in Maharashtra.
- It will be India's first leopard birth control programme.
- The pilot will be carried out in Junnar forest division (Pune district) on five female leopards using an immuno-contraceptive method.
- The sterilisation will use dart-administered immuno-contraception to temporarily control fertility.
- The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) reviewed the proposal and supported a controlled, scientifically monitored trial.
- The programme aims to reduce human–leopard conflict in sugarcane belt areas like Junnar and Shirur.
