Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution, urging the Centre to recognise Tamil as the principal language of the Madras High Court.
Article 348(2) of the Constitution allows a State’s official language to be used in High Court proceedings with the previous consent of the President of India.
The resolution sought procedures for petitions, documents and arguments in Tamil, and for making judgments, decrees and judicial orders available in Tamil.
It also urged legal Tamil and translation training for judges, advocates and court personnel, along with necessary legal measures.
The Assembly recalled that it had passed a similar unanimous resolution on December 6, 2006; the Supreme Court’s Full Court had not agreed to the proposal in 2012.
Tamil was recognised as a Classical Language by the Union government on October 12, 2004, and the resolution noted advances in legal Tamil, e-Courts, translation technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
