Recently, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) achieved captive breeding of the mangrove clam Geloina erosa.
Mangrove clams are burrowing bivalves that live in muddy and brackish mangrove-swamp habitats.
They are commonly called mud clams and are locally known as “Kandal Kakka” in northern Kerala.
Mangrove clams are widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific region.
They are filter feeders that recycle nutrients, stabilise sediments, and support mangrove ecosystems.
