- Marine Biodiversity Treaty’s Preparatory Commission concluded its second session in New York of USA on 29 August 2025.
- Formally known as the BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) Agreement under UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea).
- It was adopted in 2023.
- It applies to areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ), commonly called the High Seas.
- It aims to ensure conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity.
- The agreement covers marine genetic resources, area-based management tools including marine protected areas, environmental impact assessments, and technology transfer.
- India has signed the BBNJ Agreement but has not yet ratified it as of September 2025.
