- The rover operates in Utopia Planitia, a large northern basin on Mars.
- Ground-penetrating radar detected buried sediment layers resembling coastal deposits several metres below the surface.
- These formations date back to the Late Hesperian period, around 3.5–4 billion years ago.
- The findings suggest Mars once had a long-lasting ocean called the Deuteronilus Ocean.
- Ancient Mars likely had a warmer climate and stable liquid water, potentially supporting habitable conditions.
