Scientists have discovered a huge water reservoir nearly 700 km below Earth’s surface inside the mantle, changing ideas about Earth’s water origin.
The water is not in liquid form but is chemically trapped inside a high-pressure mineral called ringwoodite in the mantle.
This region is called the transition zone, located between 410 km and 660 km deep below the Earth’s crust.
Scientists detected this water using seismic wave studies, as waves slow down in water-rich regions, and by studying mineral samples from volcanic activity.
The hidden reservoir may contain more water than all oceans combined, but it is locked inside rocks and not freely flowing.
