Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan released Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031, a Strategic Action Plan for ornamental fisheries development, in Agatti, Lakshadweep.
The plan is implemented by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, to organise and scientifically develop India’s ornamental fish sector.
It covers the complete supply chain, including breeding, hatcheries, production, quarantine, disease management, certification, transport, trade and exports.
It aims to establish uniform operating procedures, quality assurance, biosecurity and traceability standards across the ornamental fish industry.
The plan will improve the skills of farmers and traders, product quality and access to international markets, making the sector more competitive.
Lakshadweep has been identified as a dedicated seaweed cluster, and its marine resources are also considered suitable for ornamental fish farming and other high-value fisheries activities.
