  • A mud volcano recently erupted in Diglipur in the Andaman Islands.
  • A mud volcano is a mound of mud formed when mud, water, and gases erupt from beneath the Earth’s surface.
  • It is also called a sedimentary volcano or gas-oil volcano.
  • Mud volcanoes usually form in oil-field regions or areas with hot-spring activity due to methane gas pressure and compaction of sediments.
  • Around 1,000 mud volcanoes are found on land and shallow seas worldwide.
  • In India, the only mud volcano is located at Baratang Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
