The Government of India has constituted the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) under the newly amended Disaster Management Act (Amendment) Act, 2025.
The amended Act, effective from April 9, 2025, gives legal status to key bodies, including the NCMC.
The NCMC had functioned informally even before the Disaster Management Act of 2005.
On July 23, the Ministry of Home Affairs released the Disaster Management National Crisis Management Committee (Procedure) Rules, 2025.
The committee is designated as the apex body responsible for handling disasters with national ramifications.
The committee will assess preparedness for any threatening or emerging disaster situation and issue necessary directions to strengthen response capabilities.
