The 2023 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report shows a 3.2 percent rise in suicides due to illnesses, increasing from 31,484 in 2022 to 32,503 in 2023.
Illness was the second leading cause of suicide in India in 2023.
It is accounting for 19 percent of total suicides, after family problems which accounted for 32 percent.
Suicides due to mental illness were highest under the illness category at 13,978 cases.
Suicides due to cancer rose by 14 percent from 1,251 in 2022 to 1,428 in 2023.
Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of suicides due to illness at 21 percent of the national total.
It is followed by Maharashtra at 12 percent and Karnataka at 10 percent.
A 10 percent rise in heart attack-related sudden deaths was recorded in 2023, increasing from 32,457 in 2022 to 35,715 in 2023.
Total sudden deaths rose by 13 percent from 56,450 in 2022 to 63,643 in 2023, with the highest burden among the 45–60 age group (34 percent).
Deaths due to abortion increased by 59 percent, rising from 80 in 2022 to 127 in 2023, within a total of 1,131 pregnancy-related deaths.
Deaths of women during pregnancy increased by 5.4 percent from 1,073 in 2022 to 1,131 in 2023, as reported by the NCRB.
