New Cave-Dwelling Fish Species – Meghalaya
- A new species of cave-dwelling fish named Schistura densiclava was discovered in Meghalaya.
- The discovery was made in Krem Mawjingbuiñ, a cave located near Mawsynram.
- It’s the ninth new fish species we’ve described from Northeast India.
- Also, this is the sixth known cave-associated fish from Meghalaya.
- The Most cavefish lose their eyesight and pigmentation over generations, relying on heightened non-visual senses to navigate dark waters.
- Meghalaya is home to one of the richest cave systems globally, with over 1,700 documented caves.
