- A new coffee plant species was found in the Western Ghats.
- The species, Ophiorrhiza echinata, has not previously been reported in the Western Ghats.
- It was discovered in the biodiversity-rich shola forests at Devikulam in Idukki.
- It belongs to the family Rubiaceae and is closely related to the genus Ophiorrhiza mungos.
- There are over 100 coffee plant species, of which more than 10 species are found in the Western Ghats.
