- Scientists discovered two new fruit fly species, Zeugodacus umiam and Zeugodacus nasivittatus, during a three-year survey in Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya.
- Zeugodacus umiam was named after Umiam, Meghalaya, the place where it was discovered, and was found on the Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Khasi mandarin.
- Zeugodacus nasivittatus, the second new species, was associated with sweet orange and Khasi mandarin crops.
- Researchers collected more than 35,000 fruit flies and documented 37 species across forests, fruit orchards, and vegetable ecosystems.
- Three species — Bactrocera abbreviata, Erectovena desperata, and Phorelliosoma hilaratum — were recorded for the first time in the Indian subcontinent.
