The Indian Navy is set to establish a new base in West Bengal’s Haldia, about 100 kilometres from Kolkata.
It aims to strengthen India's maritime presence in the northern Bay of Bengal region amid increasing Chinese naval presence and evolving regional security situations pertaining to Bangladesh and Pakistan.
India’s existing naval commands are the Western Naval Command in Mumbai (Maharashtra), the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and the Southern Naval Command for training in Kochi (Kerala).
It has key base in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Haldia is located on the Hooghly River near the Haldi River.
