- The Indian Navy is set to establish a new base in West Bengal’s Haldia, about 100 kilometres from Kolkata.
- It aims to strengthen India's maritime presence in the northern Bay of Bengal region amid increasing Chinese naval presence and evolving regional security situations pertaining to Bangladesh and Pakistan.
- India’s existing naval commands are the Western Naval Command in Mumbai (Maharashtra), the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and the Southern Naval Command for training in Kochi (Kerala).
- It has key base in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- Haldia is located on the Hooghly River near the Haldi River.
