Four additional weather radars will be installed in Jammu and Kashmir under Mission Mausam to improve weather forecasting and early warning systems.
Currently, three radars are operational in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir.
The installation aims to increase lead time in warning of sudden weather changes, causing intense rainfall and floods.
The monsoon rainfall from June 1 to August 31 was 6% above normal levels nationwide.
Northwest India, including Jammu, Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, received 26% more rainfall than usual.
The active monsoon was caused by a confluence of western disturbances from the Mediterranean and storms moving north from the Bay of Bengal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects this intense monsoon trend to continue through September, following an increasing rainfall trend since 1980.
