  • Four additional weather radars will be installed in Jammu and Kashmir under Mission Mausam to improve weather forecasting and early warning systems.
  • Currently, three radars are operational in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The installation aims to increase lead time in warning of sudden weather changes, causing intense rainfall and floods.
  • The monsoon rainfall from June 1 to August 31 was 6% above normal levels nationwide.
  • Northwest India, including Jammu, Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, received 26% more rainfall than usual.
  • The active monsoon was caused by a confluence of western disturbances from the Mediterranean and storms moving north from the Bay of Bengal.
  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects this intense monsoon trend to continue through September, following an increasing rainfall trend since 1980.
