New Solitary Bee Species

July 23 , 2026 16 hrs 0 min 17 0
  • Researchers from the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) discovered two new solitary bee species in the Siang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The species are Elaphropoda triangulata, named after its triangular abdominal markings, and Habropoda adi, named in honour of the Adi indigenous community.
  • Both species are currently known only from male specimens, making the discovery scientifically significant.
  • Solitary bees are important pollinators that nest alone (unlike honeybees, which live in colonies) and play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and supporting agriculture.
