Three Indian sites—Baratang’s Karst-Mud-Volcano Complex, Andaman Subduction Volcanoes and Sirpur Cultural and Archaeological Landscape—were added to the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Tentative List on 20 October 2026.
The Baratang Complex in Andaman and Nicobar Islands has limestone caves and active mud volcanoes, including the Jalki cave area.
The Andaman Subduction Volcanoes include Barren Island and Narcondam Island, both protected areas in the Andaman Sea.
Sirpur in Mahasamund district, Chhattisgarh, is an ancient cultural and archaeological landscape along the Mahanadi River, with monuments dating from the 5th to 12th century CE.
The Tentative List is a preliminary step before a site can be nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List; India currently has 45 World Heritage Sites.
