- Nicaragua has announced its withdrawal from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO.
- This happened because UNESCO gave a press freedom prize to La Prensa, a Nicaraguan newspaper.
- UNESCO member states created the World Press Freedom Prize in 1997.
- This is the only UN prize awarded to journalists.
- Earlier, Nicaragua announced its withdrawal from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
- Nicaragua has also withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council, International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
