- The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) inaugurated the world’s first hydrogen production facility using nuclear process heat at IGCAR, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu.
- The facility uses the Copper–Chlorine (Cu–Cl) thermochemical cycle powered by heat from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR).
- It is developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) as a technology demonstrator for carbon-free hydrogen production.
- The project aims to validate nuclear-based hydrogen generation and support future commercial-scale clean energy applications.
- It is the first facility globally to integrate nuclear reactor heat with Cu–Cl hydrogen production technology.
