- The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2022-23 and 2023-24 collected food intake data across India.
- The report shows the average calorie, protein, and fat intake per person and per consumer unit in rural and urban areas.
- Rural India’s average daily calorie intake was 2233 Kcal in 2022-23 and 2212 Kcal in 2023-24.
- Urban India’s average daily calorie intake was 2250 Kcal in 2022-23 and 2240 Kcal in 2023-24.
- Calorie intake increased for the lowest five groups in rural areas and the lowest six groups in urban areas from 2022-23 to 2023-24.
- There are big differences in calorie intake among major states in both years.
- With higher Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE), calorie intake also rises in rural and urban India.
- The National Statistics Office (NSO) released this report to help policymakers and researchers understand nutrition better.
