- R. Krishnan belonged to the Alu Kurumba Adivasi community of the Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu.
- He was known for cloth paintings inspired by ancient rock art sites, especially at Vellaricombai in the Nilgiris.
- He used organic paints made from natural dyes and fibres in his artworks.
