The Tamil Nadu government will plant 10 saplings for every palmyra tree cut under unavoidable circumstances.
Permission to cut palmyra trees must be obtained through the 'Uzhavan' (Farmer) mobile application.
The palmyra tree was declared the State tree of Tamil Nadu in June 1988.
In 2021, the agriculture minister announced that permission would be mandatory to cut down palmyra trees.
According to the Tamil Nadu Khadi and Village Industries Board, there were about five crore palmyra trees in Tamil Nadu as of 2019–2020.
The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University stated that there are about 10 crore palmyra trees in India.
Of the total palmyra trees in India, five crores are located in Tamil Nadu.
The Tamil Nadu government has been implementing a mission to protect the State tree for the past three years.
