Periyar Memorial in Kerala

  • The Tamil Nadu government will construct a Periyar E.V. Ramasamy memorial at Arookutty in Alappuzha, Kerala.
  • The foundation stone will be laid on September 26, 2025.
  • The Tamil Nadu government has allocated 4 crore for the project.
  • Periyar E.V. Ramasamy was jailed at Arookutty during the Vaikom Satyagraha in 1924.
  • He was arrested on May 21, 1924, and spent a month in Arookutty jail, then part of Travancore.
  • The remains of the old jail still exist at the proposed memorial site.
  • The Vaikom Satyagraha was held from March 1924 to November 1925 to protest caste-based restrictions.
  • The movement focused on access to the Vaikom Sree Mahadeva temple for all castes.
  • It was initially led by T.K. Madhavan, K.P. Kesava Menon, and George Joseph.
  • MK Gandhi supported the movement during its course.
  • Periyar joined the protest on April 13, 1924, after several leaders were jailed.
  • He took over leadership and played a key role in sustaining the agitation.
  • After his release in June 1924, he was rearrested in July and sentenced to four months of rigorous imprisonment.
  • He served the sentence at Thiruvananthapuram Central Jail.
  • The satyagraha was a key precursor to the Temple Entry Proclamation of 1936.
