- The remains of the old jail still exist at the proposed memorial site.
- The Vaikom Satyagraha was held from March 1924 to November 1925 to protest caste-based restrictions.
- The movement focused on access to the Vaikom Sree Mahadeva temple for all castes.
- It was initially led by T.K. Madhavan, K.P. Kesava Menon, and George Joseph.
- MK Gandhi supported the movement during its course.
- Periyar joined the protest on April 13, 1924, after several leaders were jailed.
- He took over leadership and played a key role in sustaining the agitation.
- After his release in June 1924, he was rearrested in July and sentenced to four months of rigorous imprisonment.
- He served the sentence at Thiruvananthapuram Central Jail.
- The satyagraha was a key precursor to the Temple Entry Proclamation of 1936.
